THE ROLE AND CHARACTER OF BELIEVERS
Beloved sisters in Christ, welcome. It is a joy to have you all today. I trust you are doing well, walking in His grace.
Last week, our focus during IWM was a fervent call to prayer for the Church. As we prepared and lifted our voices to the heavens, the Holy Spirit reminded me of a profound truth: the Church is not merely a human organization, a fragile structure, or a weak assembly swaying like a tent in the wind.
No, the Church is God’s Mighty House, a structure built, sustained, purified, and eternally preserved by God Himself. This means its strength and significance do not stem from human hands, clever plans, or earnest efforts. Its power flows directly from the indwelling presence of Almighty God, living among His people, shaping, guiding, and protecting the very Body of Christ. (Zechariah 4:6)
When we declare that the Church is God’s mighty house, we are echoing a profound mystery. It is the hallowed ground where God's eternal purposes are worked out through His chosen people. It is a community founded upon the unshakeable, eternal power of God. This foundational truth underscores why our prayers for the Church and her ministers are so vital; they are not trivial whispers, but powerful declarations for God’s work to continue unhindered, and for His people to walk faithfully in their divine calling.
Today, our study turns its gaze inward. Our focus will be on the Roles and Character of Believers. This teaching is crucial, dear sisters, because each one of us has an indispensable part to play in the growth and enduring strength of this sacred dwelling place. The Church is not just a building of brick and mortar; the Church is you and I. How we act, how we serve, and how we live out our faith determines how strong and effective God’s house truly will be.
And as we delve into this topic, I want us to cling to this singular truth, the strength of God’s mighty house is made visible in the committed lives of its members. As we pray and align ourselves with God’s purposes, we become the very vessels through which His power flows, building up the Church, supporting its leadership, and drawing a lost world to the saving knowledge of Christ.
Please join me as we read 1 Timothy 3:15.
Just as we observed in the scripture we just read, the Holy Bible calls the Church “the household of God.” It does not belong to people, pastors, or transient leaders; it belongs solely to God Himself. And within this divine household, believers are not passive spectators. We are the living pillars that uphold, support, and strengthen God’s work on earth. Just as physical pillars bear the weight of a structure, believers carry a spiritual weight through our faithfulness and obedience.
We will examine four essential points today, and I pray the Holy Spirit grants us wisdom and understanding. Amen.
Point 1: Believers Are Builders of God’s House
Please read with me, 1 Corinthians 3:9-11.
Every single believer has an active role in building the Church spiritually. Scripture explicitly tells us, “We are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9). This means God is not constructing His Church through a select few professionals; He is building it through every believer—through you, sister, and through me.
Each person contributes a unique stone: encouragement, practical service, intercessory prayer, unconditional love, generous giving, diligent teaching, hospitality, or humble support. Hear me clearly: No role is too small, and no believer is useless. Your actions are the mortar; your consistent example becomes a blueprint others follow.
However, the foundation is Christ. Every role we undertake must be rooted exclusively in Him. Paul warns us, “No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11). If our service is rooted in pride, unhealthy competition, or mere human strength, the building we erect is destined to crumble. But when everything we do is anchored in Christ—His love, truth, humility, and power, the Church becomes unshakable.
Now, sisters, think of a sturdy brick house. One solitary brick isn’t impressive; it offers no protection, no shelter, and cannot stand firm in a storm. But when many bricks are joined together, placed correctly, and perfectly aligned with the foundation, Jesus Christ—they form a strong, durable, mighty structure. Believers are the bricks. Christ is the foundation. The Holy Spirit is the Master Builder. You matter because your unique presence and your vibrant faith add substantial strength to the whole house. (John 15:5)
Point 2: Believers Are Servants, Not Spectators
Let’s read together Matthew 20:26-28.
A critical part of building God’s mighty house is selfless service. This is precisely why the Church has diverse departments: ushering, media, worship, children’s ministry, prayer teams, evangelism, hospitality, and more. Each area exists because the House of God needs many hands, many hearts, and many different gifts working in seamless unity.
Some roles are visible, like the worship leaders or those who preach from this pulpit. Other roles are quiet, hidden, yet essential—like the intercessors who pray in secret, the cleaners who ensure His house is holy, or those who handle the technical support that makes our gathering possible.
Whether visible or hidden, every single role matters intensely to God. Colossians 3:23 reminds us: “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord and not unto men.” When you serve in this house, you are not doing it for human recognition. You are not doing it for applause or praise. You are doing it for the Almighty God Himself, and He is the One who truly rewards. The Church becomes a mighty house only when its members actively engage in service. It cannot stand strong if only a few dedicated individuals carry the entire weight. (Galatians 6:2), (Exodus 18). The body grows and flourishes when every single believer supports the work of God and upholds the leadership.
No service is too small. No contribution is insignificant. A mighty church is a serving church. If your area of strength is the ushering department, serve with all your heart. If your spiritual gift is prayer—serve with all your strength. If you love organization and helping others, support the administration or hospitality ministries.
Do not fall into the trap of saying, “I just want a low-key life.” You can be low-key and still be profoundly faithful. Serving God does not ruin your low profile; it strengthens your spirit, deepens your character, and highly honors your Heavenly Father. We must actively serve, not just attend, to contribute to the growth of God’s house. And may the Lord help us in Jesus' name.
God often tests our heart in service before entrusting us with more. Many sincere people say, “I want to know my calling,” or “I know God has called me to something great.” This is true, every believer does have a great calling! But here is a vital spiritual truth: Before God gives a man or woman a platform, He gives them a place of service. Before God hands out greater responsibilities, He looks intently at your faithfulness in the small things.
God places us in quiet areas of service to watch how we serve and from what kind of heart we serve. If you cannot serve now, faithfully, when no one is watching, how will you handle the responsibility when the eyes of many are upon you? Faithfulness in small assignments unlocks bigger, kingdom assignments.
So today, I encourage you, my sisters:
- Ask yourself: Where can I serve? What unique contribution can I make?
- Do not wait to be pushed or guilted into action. Volunteer with a willing heart.
- Find a department that aligns with your strength and passion.
- Serve with joy, excellence, and consistency.
Your Father sees your obedience. Your Father will surely reward you.
Now, let’s bring this home for a moment. Imagine this is your physical home. If your house is dirty, you don’t sit back and wait for a stranger to come and clean it. You roll up your sleeves and get the work done, because you care deeply about your home. The same principle applies to the House of God. If we do not clean it, build it, serve in it, and support it, who will? God never forces us; He lovingly invites us. And Scripture warns us that if we refuse, He can raise up others who are willing and eager. It is true wisdom to be counted among the ones God chooses to use.
To be true builders of God’s mighty house, we must understand our vital role and commit to serving actively. Serving in God’s house is never a burden, it is a sacred honor that shapes us, strengthens the Church, and glorifies God. We are ambassadors: in character, in building, and in our service to one another.
A Call to Active Building
We've explored two foundational truths today: We are builders, laying our unique contributions on the foundation of Christ, and we are servants called to mutual support, preventing the weight of the ministry from resting on just a few. The Church only stands mighty when every brick is in place and every servant is engaged.
As you go about your week, prayerfully consider these roles: Where is God calling you to build? How can you transition from being a spectator to a selfless servant in His house?
Next week, we will continue this vital study by looking at our internal walk-examining the crucial role of character and the unstoppable power of prayer in strengthening God's mighty house.
Until then, may you walk in His grace and find joy in your service.
Blessings in Christ
