He Sustained You

IWM Devotion: He Sustained You

Key Scripture:
Psalm 3:5, “I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the Lord was watching over me.”

Word For Today

There are moments in life where you don’t even have the words to explain how you made it through. Not because nothing happened, but because so much happened at once that you almost expected yourself to break.

Yet somehow, you are still here. Still standing. Still breathing. Still moving forward. That is what it means when we say, “He sustained you.” Psalm 3:5 says, “I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.” That is not just a nice verse for encouragement. That is a testimony from someone who had every reason not to sleep peacefully.

David wrote this while he was running from danger, surrounded by pressure, betrayal, and uncertainty. Yet in the middle of that kind of season, he still slept, and still woke up. That alone tells you something, it was not circumstances that kept him. It was God. He also has been keeping us all. If we want to be honest, there are seasons where you don’t feel strong, you just feel carried. You don’t feel like you had enough wisdom, enough energy. But somehow, you didn’t collapse.

That is sustaining grace. It is God keeping you steady, It is strength that shows up when yours runs out. It is protection you don’t always see in real time but only recognize after the fact.

Because many times, you only realize you were sustained when you look back and think, “I don’t even know how I got through that season.” You may not have had perfect answers. You may not have had everything figured out. But you were still preserved through it. And that is what makes this so personal, God does not only change situations, sometimes He holds you together inside the situation.

There are battles that don’t remove you, but they could have broken you. There are pressures that didn’t disappear overnight, but somehow they didn’t destroy you either. And in those quiet spaces, where no one sees the struggle you’re carrying, God is still working, sustaining you in ways words cannot fully explain.

It is also important to understand that sustaining does not always feel like a miracle moment. Sometimes it feels like normal days. Waking up. Getting through the day. Finding peace in small spaces. But underneath it all is divine strength keeping you consistent when life tries to scatter you.

There was always a hand holding you steady even when you didn’t feel it. This is why David could sleep. Not because the danger disappeared, but because he learned where his real safety was. And we should all do that.

So when you look at your own life, the real question is not only what you have survived, but what has been sustaining you all along. Because sometimes the biggest proof of God’s presence is not what He removed, but what He kept you standing through.

Before we go today, I want you to pause, just for a second. Whatever you’re carrying, whatever feels heavy, place it in God’s hands. Now softly say, Father, You are the One who sustains me. When I feel like I’m running low, You never run out.
Hold me steady today, and carry what I cannot.
I trust You to keep me. Amen.

And here’s something to hold onto as you go. You don’t have to push through life in your own strength. God is not watching from a distance, He is actively holding you up.

So today, don’t just try, lean.

Blessings
