Leading with Humility

IWM Devotion: Leading with Humility

Scripture:
"But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant." — Matthew 20:26 (ESV)

Word For Today

I used to believe leadership was defined by the loudest voice in the boardroom or the most meticulously color-coded planner. I thought authority was something you grabbed and held onto tightly. But last week, while sitting with 1 Peter 5, the Holy Spirit whispered a different truth.

Our culture screams that leadership is about "climbing the ladder" and accumulating titles. Yet, Jesus completely shatters that narrative. He reminds us that godly leadership isn't about being served; it’s about being the first to pick up the towel. Whether you are leading a corporation, a small group, or a household, God doesn't measure your greatness by who is under you, but by how you move toward those people in service.

Make no mistake, humility is a lot for a leader to carry. It isn't just a character trait; it is the very foundation of your success. To succeed as a God-honoring leader, you must possess a humble spirit, especially when the pressure is on. Humility is tested most when people complain, when they disagree, or when they fail you. A worldly leader reacts with pride or defensiveness, but a humble leader listens, stays steady, and responds with grace.

In 1 Peter 5:5-6, “And all of you, serve each other in humility, for “God opposes the proud but favors the humble. So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.”

When we stop trying to control and start choosing to support, we begin to mirror the heart of Christ. He didn't just give us a lecture on humility; He demonstrated it by washing the dirty feet of the very men who would soon desert Him. True leadership isn't found in a title on a door; it’s found in the posture of our hearts.

If you want to lead well, look to the Chief Shepherd. He leads by walking among them, shouldering their burdens and making the path safe. He is the Leader who stoops low to wash dusty feet, proving that the highest seat in heaven is reserved for those who take the lowest place on earth.

Application

Identify one person you are in charge of or leading today. Instead of leading with a directive or a critique, lead with a question, "How can I best support or serve you today?" Then, listen, not just to their words, but to their needs.

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve sought the spotlight instead of the towel. Help me to see the people in my care through Your eyes. Give me a heart that finds joy in their growth and a spirit that is willing to go low so they can rise. Make me a leader who looks like Jesus. Amen.
