Abiding, Not Performing
IWM Devotional: Abiding, Not Performing
Scripture: John 15:4–5 – “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me… for apart from me you can do nothing.” (ESV)
Word for Today
Over the past several days, we have been invited to examine heart-level righteousness, our relationship with the Holy Spirit, and the fruit that reveals genuine transformation. Jesus now brings all of this together with a simple yet profound invitation, abide in Me.
Abiding is not striving. It is not performing or proving our faith through effort alone. Abiding is remaining, staying connected to Jesus in trust, dependence, and in surrender. Just as a branch does not struggle to produce fruit, but simply stays connected to the vine, fruit in our lives is the natural result of living in close relationship with Christ.
So often, we try to produce spiritual fruit through discipline without intimacy, or obedience without relationship. We work harder, try to do better, and measure our faith by our activity. But Jesus reminds us that apart from Him, we can do nothing of lasting value. Fruit that truly reflects God’s character cannot be manufactured—it must be grown.
Abiding shifts the focus from what we are doing for God to how deeply we are connected to Him. It invites us to slow down, listen, and remain in His presence. From that place of connection, the Holy Spirit forms Christ within us, shaping our hearts and producing fruit that lasts.
This is the heart of righteousness that exceeds outward religion. It is not a life marked by perfection, but by dependence. Not driven by performance, but sustained by relationship. When we abide, obedience flows naturally, love deepens, and fruit becomes evident—not because we force it, but because God is at work within us.
Jesus’ invitation is simple and ongoing, Remain in Me. In that place, transformation happens. In that place, fruit grows. And in that place, our lives reflect the heart of God.
Personal Reflection
- What does abiding in Christ look like in my daily life?
- Where have I been striving instead of remaining connected to Him?
- How can I create intentional space to rest in His presence and depend on Him more fully?
Fruit grows where relationship is nurtured.
Prayer
Jesus, please teach me to abide in You. Help me release the need to perform and trust You as my source of life. Draw me into deeper dependence on You, and let my life produce fruit that reflects Your love and character. I want to remain in You, today and always. Amen
