Discernment — Knowing What God Is Saying and Doing

IWM Devotional:
Discernment — Knowing What God Is Saying and Doing

Scripture: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”-Romans 12:1

Word for Today

Discernment is not just about hearing God’s voice—it’s about recognizing His direction, timing, and restraint. It is the quiet wisdom that helps us know when to move, when to wait, and when to let go.

We live in a world full of distractions—everyone has an opinion, expectations are everywhere, and everything feels urgent, so knowing what really matters is more important than ever. Especially for women, whose lives often involve pouring into many people and responsibilities at once, discernment protects the heart from burnout and misalignment.

Without discernment, it’s easy to say yes to things God never meant for us to carry. We can confuse being busy with actually walking in purpose, or hold on to assignments God has already brought to a close.

Discernment helps us ask better questions, not just “Can I do this?” but “Is this what God is asking of me right now?”

So many women feel tired, pulled in every direction, and overwhelmed. But a lot of that exhaustion doesn’t come from doing too much, it comes from holding on to things that no longer fit this season.

God doesn’t call us to constant motion. Sometimes His instruction is simply pause, let go, rest, and refocus

Discernment gives permission to lay down what looks good but isn’t God’s best right now.

Let’s lean into discernment together. As Romans 12:2 reminds us, we are transformed when we renew our minds and learn to discern God’s will. We don’t have to be everywhere or do everything, only what God is asking of us in this season.

Personal Reflection

Take a moment to reflect today:

  • Am I responding to God, or to pressure?

  • What have I been holding onto out of habit instead of obedience?

  • Where might God be redirecting me, not because I failed—but because the season has changed?

Prayer

Lord, help me trust You beyond my own understanding. Quiet every voice that is not Yours. Give me clarity to know what to pursue, what to pause, and what to release. Align my heart with Your timing and my steps with Your will. I choose discernment over pressure, obedience over noise, and Your direction over my assumptions. Amen
