The Posture of Growth: Pride, Mentorship, and Taking Action
IWM Devotional: The Posture of Growth: Pride, Mentorship, and Taking Action
Scripture: “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18
Word for Today
The real enemy to growth is often pride, not time, opportunity, or resources. Pride whispers, “I shouldn’t need help. What will people think?” But people will always talk. Some won’t notice your effort, others may misunderstand it, and some will respect only the results. Stop explaining yourself. Let your growth speak.
Learning from those who have gone ahead is not shameful, it’s wise. Moses needed Jethro’s counsel. Timothy needed Paul’s mentorship. Apollos needed Priscilla and Aquila. They listened and became mightier. Teachability often accomplishes more than talent alone.
There was a time in my own journey when I hesitated to step into growth because I feared opinions. But I prayed, “Holy Spirit, help me.” I chose humility, and learning over fear. That choice opened doors I couldn’t have reached otherwise.
Excuses like “God will do it” or “I’m waiting on God” can mask pride. Faith requires responsibility—grow, prepare, and step into opportunity. “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings.” — Proverbs 22:29
God never withholds wisdom from the humble seeker. “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God… and it will be given to him.” — James 1:5
Reflection
Today, identify one area where pride or fear is limiting your growth. Decide to seek instruction, mentorship, or resources that will help you rise.
Prayer
Father, give me a humble and teachable heart. Remove every form of pride, fear, and excuse that keeps me from growing. Help me learn willingly, receive wisdom freely, and grow faithfully in every area of my life. May my growth honor You and bless those You have entrusted to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Wisdom is not proven by what we know, but by how we grow. When humility leads and action follows, wisdom stays in motion.
