IWM Devotional: Don’t Despise the Small Beginning
Scripture: “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.”-Zechariah 4:10
Word for Today
Ladies, can we be honest? Most of us don’t struggle with starting. We struggle with starting small. We want the full vision. The finished product. The answered prayer in its complete form. We don’t want the seed. We want the tree. But God often works in beginnings that look unimpressive.
A single client. One subscriber. A quiet prayer. A small act of obedience no one praises. And if we’re not careful, we will underestimate what heaven celebrates. Zechariah 4:10, the Word says, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” Read that again. The Lord rejoices, to see it begin. Not when it’s viral. Not when it’s profitable. Not when everyone finally understands it. But when it begins.
We live in a world obsessed with scale. Bigger is better. Faster is favored. Visible is validated. But the Kingdom of God does not measure the way culture measures. Small does not mean insignificant. Hidden does not mean forgotten. And Slow does not mean stagnant.
Think about it, every calling starts as a whisper. Every ministry begins as a burden. Every family legacy begins with two people saying yes. Even faith itself often starts as a mustard seed. Now, the danger is not in starting small. The danger is in despising where you are. Because when you despise your beginning, you mishandle it. You rush it, you compare it, you question if it’s even worth continuing.
Comparison will make your seed feel like a failure because it hasn’t become someone else’s harvest yet. But seeds and harvests exist in different seasons. You cannot compare your planting season to someone else’s reaping season and call it lack. I believe that small beginnings require deep trust. There’s no crowd yet. No applause. Sometimes no confirmation beyond a quiet nudge in your spirit. And that’s where fear tries to creep in again. “Is this even worth it? Does this even matter? or Am I wasting my time?” But what if the small thing in your hand is the very thing God intends to multiply?
We often pray for overflow while neglecting the little we’ve already been given. One idea. One step. One obedient move. He doesn’t ask you to finish the whole staircase. He asks you to step on the first step. And here’s something I want you to hold close, small beginnings protect you. They build your character before visibility. They develop your discipline before influence. They strengthen your roots before elevation. If everything grew overnight, it wouldn’t have the structure to sustain it.
So don’t rush the becoming. Water the seed. Show up consistently. Honor what feels minor. Because heaven sees differently. The Lord rejoices to see the work begin. And that means when you register the business, He rejoices. When you open your Bible again after a dry season, He rejoices. When you try again after disappointment, He rejoices.
You may look at your life and see “only.” Only a little progress. Only a small circle. Only a quiet season. But hear me dear woman, God sees potential. And what He blesses in seed form will not remain a seed forever.
So don’t underestimate this chapter. Don’t belittle your progress. Don’t talk down about what God is building slowly. The same God who creates oceans starts with droplets. The same God who builds nations starts with families. The same God who fulfills promises starts with preparation.
Small is not shameful. But it is divine, it's precious.
Prayer
Father, help me honor small beginnings. Teach me to see what You see and trust Your timing. Give me patience to nurture what You have placed in my hands. Amen.
