Led, Known, and Kept

IWM Devotional: Led, Known and Kept

Scripture:“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”-Psalm 23:1

Word for Today

Most of us know this verse by heart. We learned it as children. We can quote it without thinking. Some of us could recite it half-asleep. But familiarity has a quiet danger, it can make powerful truth feel ordinary.

And yet, Psalm 23:1 is anything but ordinary. David doesn’t say “The Lord is a shepherd.” He says, “The Lord is my shepherd.” That word my is personal. It speaks of relationship, ownership, and trust. To call the Lord your Shepherd is to say, “I am not leading my own life. I am being led.”

A shepherd is not one who stands apart. A shepherd walks ahead of the sheep. He guides them to safe paths, watches for danger, provides, and protects them when they are vulnerable. Sheep don’t survive by intelligence or strength; they survive by staying close to their shepherd and following his voice.

So when David says, “The Lord is my shepherd,” he is declaring, “God is my guide. God is my leader. God is my protector. God is my provider.”

Then comes the result of that belief“I shall not want.” This does not mean you will never desire anything or never face lack. It means that when God is truly your Shepherd, you trust that nothing essential to your life, purpose, or destiny will be missing. It means you rest in the assurance that the One who leads you knows exactly what you need, and when you need it.

Here is where many of us struggle. As believers, we often say things we don’t fully believe. We say, “The Lord is my shepherd,” but we live anxious, worried, and overwhelmed. We pray, yet we panic. We confess faith, yet we cling tightly to control.

If the Lord is truly your Shepherd, then worry has no permanent home in your heart. And that applies to everything—marriage, career, family, children, finances, the future. Whatever is troubling you right now, the invitation is the same, stop trying to lead yourself. Decide to rely on the One who is leading you.

An appointed shepherd does not ask the sheep to figure out the route. He does not expect them to provide their own food or defend themselves from predators. Their responsibility is simple, follow.

In the same way, God does not ask you to carry the weight of your life alone. He asks you to trust Him enough to follow. To believe that His direction is better than your anxiety. That His care is more reliable than your fear.

So, when you say, “The Lord is my shepherd,” you are choosing surrender over striving, trust over tension, and faith over fear.

Let Him lead, provide, and let Him cover you. You don’t have to know the whole path, you just have to follow the Shepherd.

Prayer

Lord, You are my Shepherd. I choose to trust You today. Lead me where I need to go, provide what I truly need, and help me stop worrying about what I cannot control. Teach my heart to follow You fully and rest in Your care. I place my life, my future, and my concerns in Your hands. Amen.
