Let Christ Be the Standard
IWM Devotion: Let Christ Be the Standard
Scripture: “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” —1 Corinthians 11:1 (NIV)
Word for Today
Yesterday, we reflected on the responsibility of being an example. Today, we turn our attention to the wisdom required in choosing who we follow. Now, there are times in life when we come to see that we cannot journey alone. There are moments when God calls us into purpose, and we know instinctively, we need guidance, someone who can walk with us faithfully, who can show us the way in wisdom and prayer.
I recall a moment in my own journey when I felt that very need. Yes, I sought God for direction, and I still do, but I also desired someone I could boldly, safely, and confidently follow. Not just anyone. Not just any man or woman. I prayed fervently for a mentor, someone God would use to shepherd me in my calling. And in His faithfulness, He not only saved me from decisions that could have led me astray but also blessed me with someone far beyond what I had imagined, a leader I could trust and call my mentor.
Here’s the key, not every mentor is meant for you. The Bible gives us a standard. In 1 Corinthians 11:1, Paul writes, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” This verse isn’t just for leaders; it’s for those who desire to follow. The principle is simple yet deep, the person you choose to follow must themselves be following Christ. Building on what we explored in yesterday’s devotional. A mentor or leader is only as valuable as the One they reflect.
When we choose a mentor, we are essentially saying, I want someone to guide me, to influence me, to teach me, but I also want someone whose life points me to Jesus. If a mentor cannot model Christ’s humility, integrity, love, and faithfulness, then they are not fit to lead in your journey.
And as women, this discernment reaches beyond us. If not only for ourselves, then for our children. They are watching how we follow, who we listen to, and whose voices we allow to shape our lives. It becomes important that we pay attention to who they admire, who they look up to, and where those influences are leading their hearts. Our discernment today helps guide their faith tomorrow.
This is why discernment is critical. Pray, seek God’s confirmation, and measure the life of a potential mentor against the life of Jesus Christ. Do they reflect His character? Do they point you to Him in their words, their decisions, and their example?
I want to encourage you today, if you are praying for a mentor, keep your eyes on Christ first. Let Him be your guide in selecting someone who will walk with you in godly wisdom. When you align yourself under the right leader, you not only grow in skill or knowledge—you grow in faith, maturity, and a deeper understanding of Christ.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for the leaders and mentors You have placed in our lives. Give us discernment to follow those who reflect Your heart. Protect us from wrong guidance, and lead us to the ones who will point us boldly to Jesus. May our lives, through their influence, mirror Your love and truth. Amen.
Remember, a mentor is a gift, but only when they reflect the ultimate Mentor, Jesus Christ Himself. Seek wisely, pray fervently, and trust God to bring the right person at the right time.
