IWM Devotional: Surely God's Goodness

Scripture:
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.—Psalm 23:6

Word for Today

This is how I hold it in my heart, “Surely God’s goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will keep dwelling in the presence of the Lord forever.” That’s not just something I quote, that’s something I stand on. Because “surely” is not Naïve optimism. It’s not hopeful language. It’s certainty, confidence, and it's settled truth.

Surely. Not maybe, not depending on the season, not depending on my performance. Surely His goodness and mercy follow me. And I love that word, follow. In the original sense, it’s stronger than a casual trailing behind. It means to pursue, to chase after. Think about that.

You’re not chasing God’s goodness. It’s chasing you. Even on days you feel unworthy, even after mistakes, even in seasons where you don’t feel spiritual enough. His goodness still follows. His mercy still follows.

And it says “all the days of my life.” Not just the obedient days. Not just the days I prayed long prayers. Not just the days I felt strong. All the days. The grieving days, the confused days, or the days you doubted yourself, even in the days you felt unseen. I’ll tell you this much, this is a blessing that lasts a lifetime.

God does not lease His presence. He doesn’t move in and out based on mood, nor is He seasonal. He doesn’t abandon His sheep halfway through the journey.

If we ever doubt that, that’s our fear speaking, not the truth. Because doubt whispers, “What if He leaves?” But truth says, “He never has.”

Throughout the Bible, we see this promise repeated. And in Hebrews 13:5, it says, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Never is a strong word. In Lamentations 3:22–23, we’re reminded, “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning.”

Not recycled mercy. New mercy.

Every morning you wake up, mercy is already there. Goodness is already assigned to your day. And then the verse ends so beautifully, “And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

This isn’t just about heaven, though yes, it includes eternity. It’s about living aware of His presence now. Making His presence your home. Choosing to stay close. It’s relational, and it's intimate.

Our Shepherd is not distant. Our King is not unreachable. Our Lord is not absent. Our Father does not walk away. He stays. Through growth, failure, healing, and through becoming.

So today, I want to remind you, if you feel alone, that feeling is not the final truth. If you feel forgotten, that is not your reality. If you feel like you’ve wandered too far, you have not outrun His goodness. Surely, His goodness and mercy are not behind you as memories, they are behind you as protection and before you as promise.

This is not just a verse to recite. It is a life to live — secure, pursued, covered, and held. And that kind of security changes how you wake up in the morning. Because you are not walking into your day alone.

Goodness is following you. Mercy is following you. And your Shepherd is not going anywhere.
Before you move on, I want to invite you to do something simple… but powerful. Don’t just read it, don’t just admire it. Let’s declare it, as truth over our life.

Say it slowly. Mean it deeply. Let it settle in your spirit sisters, “Surely God’s goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will keep dwelling in the presence of the Lord forever.”

Again, but this time from within. Not from fear, not from striving. But from confidence in your Shepherd.

This is your portion. This is your covering. This is your lifetime promise. Today, we don’t just quote Psalm 23 23:6. We receive it.

Blessings
