What You Choose to Hear Shapes You
IWM Devotional: What You Choose to Hear Shapes You
Scripture: “My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words… for they are life to those who find them… Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:20-23
Word for Today
Last time, we talked about how you speak to yourself. Today, as women, I want you to know this truth as well, what you allow yourself to hear. Whether from others, the world, or your own mind, shapes who you become. Every message you receive, every inner word you repeat, has the power to form your identity, influence your confidence, and even affect your joy.
Knowing what God says about you is crucial. His words are life-giving, restorative, and unshakable. They tell the truth about who you are: deeply loved, intentionally made, and wonderfully treasured. If your inner voice contradicts God’s declaration, it’s time to recalibrate.
Every day, you encounter voices, some external, some internal. Some are harsh, judgmental, and condemning. Others bring encouragement, truth, and hope. But not every voice is from God. Scripture warns believers to “test the spirits” to discern what is true (1 John 4:1). A voice from God will never steal your hope, diminish your worth, or contradict the truth of His Word.
Just like our key scripture, Proverbs 4:20–23 reveals that formation begins with attention. The command to turn your ear shows that listening is a choice, not a passive act. What we consistently give our attention to does not remain external; it is received into the heart.
Your inner words are powerful. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Words that condemn and belittle plant seeds of fear, shame, and limitation. Words aligned with God’s truth plant seeds of courage, confidence, and freedom.
God-Centered self-love is not only about intentionally listening, but also responding to voices in alignment with God’s truth. Conviction from God leads you toward growth and restoration; shame leads to hiding and silence. When you know God’s voice and His promises about you, you can speak to yourself with the same compassion, grace, and hope He shows.
Discerning God’s voice is an act of faith and self-love. A healthy inner voice nurtures life, hope, and freedom. It honors the identity God has given you and resists the lies that try to define you.
Remember, what you hear doesn't just inform you, it forms your faith.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, teach me to recognize conviction that heals and reject condemnation that harms. Help me nurture words within that bring life, hope, and freedom, honoring the identity You have given me. Amen.
