When Fear Tries to Take the Throne
IWM Devotional: When Fear Tries to Take the Throne
Scripture: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and of a sound mind.”—2 Timothy 1:7
Word for Today
Have you ever talked yourself out of something you really wanted? You filled out the application… then didn’t submit it. You almost started the business… but convinced yourself the market was “too saturated.” You felt ready to love again… but pulled back because what if it ends the same way? You wanted to speak up in the meeting… but let someone else take the credit. Not because you weren’t capable. But because fear whispered, “What if you’re not enough?”
That whisper is familiar to so many of us. Fear doesn’t always look obvious. Sometimes it looks like playing small. Sometimes it looks like procrastination. Sometimes it looks like “waiting on confirmation” when deep down you’re just afraid to move. And if we’re honest, as women especially, we have been conditioned to anticipate disappointment. To prepare for things not working out. To guard our hearts by lowering our expectations.
So we don’t launch. We don’t try. We don’t risk. We tell ourselves it’s wisdom. But sometimes, it’s fear wearing wisdom’s clothes. In 2 Timothy 1:7, the Word is clear, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and of a sound mind.” If He did not give it, we do not have to nurture it.
Fear is dangerous because it doesn’t just make you feel anxious, it quietly starts making decisions for you. It edits your dreams before you ever voice them. It convinces you to shrink before anyone even challenges you. It will have you rejecting yourself before anyone else has the chance to. And that is a tragedy. Because fear can prevent you from fulfillment.
I’ve had moments where fear tried to sit heavy on my chest too. Moments where the “what ifs” were louder than the promises. And instead of wrestling every anxious thought, I began declaring this scripture aloud, “God has not given me a spirit of fear.” Now, I didn’t always feel powerful when I said it. I didn’t always feel bold. But you know what, every time I declared it, something aligned inside me. Because when you speak the Word, you confront the lie. And that’s where the battle truly is, in the mind.
Fear magnifies worst-case scenarios, but Faith magnifies God. Fear says, “What if it doesn’t happen?” Faith says, “What if it does?” Fear keeps you in Egypt because at least Egypt is predictable, just like we see in the Book of Exodus when the Israelites longed for what was familiar, even though it was bondage.
Fear will always try to make captivity look comfortable. That is why it is so dangerous. It doesn’t just make you tremble, it makes you retreat. I believe with all my heart that you were not created to live braced for disappointment, always expecting the worst, always preparing for things to fall apart. No, that’s not who you are. You were created to walk in power. To live with confidence. To stand secure in who God says you are. And that’s not just positive talk, that’s what my Bible tells me.
Power means you can move forward even while your voice shakes. Love means you don’t let fear harden your heart. A sound mind means you are not ruled by every intrusive thought. So if you’ve been shrinking, if you’ve been delaying, if you’ve been talking yourself out of what God is calling you into. Please pause.
Ask yourself gently, Is this wisdom, or is this fear? And then declare the truth anyway. Because fear may knock. But it does not get to decide your future.
You were not created to live in hiding. You were not gifted just to play small. You were not anointed to sit on potential. That idea in your heart? That vision that won’t leave you alone? That desire to build, to lead, to create, to speak, to serve? It did not come to torment you. It came because there is something in you that heaven recognizes. Fear will always try to disqualify what God has already qualified. Psalm 56:3.
And to the women reading this, this is your reminder, Do not hide. Do not bury your gifts under insecurity.
Do not silence your voice because it shakes. Do not abandon what God placed in your hands because doubt got loud. Come out. Come out into purpose, into profession, into the calling God has wrapped around your life (Esther 4:14). If you’ve already started, if you stepped out in faith and now negative thoughts are circling your mind, do not stop. Do not quit halfway. Do not give up what you prayed for just because it feels uncomfortable.
Start that business. Apply again. Launch it. Speak up. Write the book. Lead the meeting. Go back to school. Build what God showed you. You are not “too late.” You are not “too much.” You are not “not enough.” You are capable. You are called. You are equipped. And it’s time to shine ladies.
Now go, and take up space in every room God has prepared for you.
Prayer
Father, reveal every place where fear has caused me to shrink. Give me courage to move forward in power, love, and a sound mind. Help me trust You more than I trust my worries. Amen.
