Word For Today

Rest is something many people talk about, but very few truly understand. In today’s world, rest is often seen as a reward, something you earn after working hard. So people keep pushing, striving, doing more, thinking, “I’ll rest later.”But God never designed rest to be a reward. He designed it to be a rhythm.

If you go back to the beginning, you’ll see this clearly. In Genesis, after God created everything, the Bible says, And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work (Genesis 2:2).

Now think about this, God did not rest because He was tired. God does not get tired. So why did He rest? He was showing us a pattern. Rest is not about weakness. It is about alignment. It is about knowing when to stop, when to step back, and be refreshed, spiritually, mentally, and physically.

God built rest into creation itself. The day God rested is what we call the Sabbath. And something many people don’t realize is this, the Sabbath is actually Saturday, not Sunday.

From the biblical pattern, the seventh day is the Sabbath, which aligns with Saturday. Over time, many Christians began gathering on Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, and that became a tradition. But originally, the Sabbath day set apart for rest was Saturday.

This is not about arguing days, it’s about understanding the principle. God intentionally set apart a day for rest. He blessed it and made it holy. That means rest is spiritual.

One deep truth many people miss is this, rest requires trust. When you refuse to rest, sometimes it’s not just about being busy. It can come from fear. Fear that if you stop, things will fall apart. Fear that you’ll fall behind. Fear that you’re not doing enough. And I do not want you to get this the wrong way. Yes most of us find ourselves doing this. But today I want us to really understand what we meant by rest.

When you rest the way God designed, you are saying, “God, I trust You enough to pause.” Now, you are trusting that your life is not sustained by your effort alone.

His word says, “Be still, and know that I am God”, Psalm 46:10. Stillness is not laziness. It is a position of trust. Rest is more than sleep. You can sleep for hours and still feel tired. Why? Because true rest goes deeper.

Physical rest is your body recovering. Mental rest is your mind slowing down. Emotional rest is letting go of pressure and anxiety. Spiritual rest is reconnecting with God. And If one of these is missing, you can still feel drained. That’s why some people are always tired, not because they are doing too much physically, but because they are carrying too much internally.

Many people ignore rest until their body or mind forces them to stop. And I have come to learn this. And I will show you what lack of rest can cause. Lack of rest can lead to burnout, constant stress, anxiety, irritability, emotional exhaustion, poor decision-making, and even spiritual dryness. When you are tired, you don’t think clearly. You react instead of respond. You lose patience easily. Even your relationship with God can feel distant, not because He moved, but because you are too drained to connect.

Rest is not optional. It is necessary for healthy living. And in today’s world, everything is fast. Phones, social media, work, responsibilities, there is always something demanding your attention. Even when you are not working, your mind is still active.

That’s why intentional rest is more important now than ever. You have to choose to pause.

Beloved, take time away from constant noise. Step back from things that drain you. Create moments where you are not performing, not proving, not striving.

Sometimes rest looks like sitting quietly with God. Sometimes it looks like putting your phone down. Sometimes it looks like saying, “Not today.” Jesus also spoke about rest in a deeper way, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28).

This is not just physical rest. This is soul rest. A rest that removes pressure, a rest that lifts burdens, a rest that reminds you that you don’t have to carry everything alone. Rest is not something you fit into your life when you have time. It is something you build your life around.

God rested, not because He needed it, but because we would. The Sabbath shows us that rest is previous. And It is a gift. It is also a command. And it is a way to stay aligned with how God designed us to live.

If you keep running without rest, something will eventually break your body, your mind, or even your spirit. But when you learn to rest the right way, you don’t just recover, you become stronger, clearer, and more connected to God.

So don’t wait until you are exhausted. Rest, because God designed you to.

Prayer

Lord, grant me rest for my body, peace for my mind, and calm for my heart. Refresh me and renew my strength. Amen.

Take this weekend to rest and recharge for the week ahead.
