Feeding Your Spirit with the Word
IWM Devotion: Feeding Your Spirit with the Word
Key Scripture: Matthew 4:4, “"It takes more than bread to stay alive. It takes a steady stream of words from God's mouth." (MSG)
Word For Today
Welcome ladies to a beautiful day. let’s talk about something we don’t skip, and that’s food. You can miss one breakfast and still function. Miss lunch, you get cranky. Miss dinner, you’re angry. But go 3 days without food? Your body shuts down.
Your spirit works the same way. And most of us are spiritually angry and calling it “just a bad week.” Your spirit is hungry by design. Yes. In Matthew 4:4, Jesus was in the wilderness, 40 days no food, and the devil tempts Him to turn stones to bread. Jesus answers, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” And I want us to pay attention to this verse. He didn’t say “Man shall not eat.” He said “not by bread alone.” Your body needs bread. But your spirit? It cannot live on motivation, Instagram quotes, or vibes. It lives on every word from God’s mouth.
If you only feed your body and starve your spirit, you’ll be full but empty. Busy but weak, awake but not alive.
The Word is not information. It’s nutrition and John 6:63 says, “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” And so, God’s Word isn’t just letters on a page. It’s spiritual food. It’s life entering you. When you read “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” Psalm 23:1, you’re not memorizing poetry. You’re eating peace. When you declare “I can do all things through Christ” Philippians 4:13, you’re eating strength.
The devil knows this. That’s why he’ll fight your Bible time harder than your work meeting. Because a fed spirit is a powerful spirit.
The question now, is how do we actually feed our spirit daily? And I want us to understand this, you don’t need 2 hours and a Greek lexicon. You need consistency and a meal plan. First, get a bite-size, but daily. Because it’s better to eat one verse deeply than 10 chapters numbly. Take Matthew 4:4. Chew it. “Not by bread alone…” Let’s ask ourselves shortly this question, “What am I trying to live on besides His Word? Approval? Money? Control?. After that, here comes the Speaking. I don’t just want us to read it. Like John 6:63 says, His words are spirit and life. Life is released when spoken. And spoken out loud. You can try this with Psalm 91, read it out loud before you leave home. You’re feeding your spirit and building your armor at the same time.
Lastly, Replace snacks with substance. When stress hits, we reach for phone-scrolling like chips. Next time, reach for the Word like protein. Anxious? Eat 1 Peter 5:7. Weak? Eat Isaiah 40:31. Tempted? Eat Matthew 4:4 right back at the enemy like Jesus did.
Beloved, trust God and follow this meal plan for nourishing your spirit and you will notice the change. And please don’t just do them but believe in what you say and let it work for you. Faith is very important. And even if it’s as little as mustard seed, it will go along way: and I pray that Out God help strengthen you.
Prayer
Father, forgive me for trying to live by bread alone. For feeding my body 3 times a day but starving my spirit all week. Today I acknowledge, your Word is my real food. Your words are spirit and life to me.
Holy Spirit, make me hungry again. Give me a craving for Scripture that’s stronger than my craving for distraction. Let every word I read today nourish me, strengthen me, and keep me. I want to remain. Feed me, Lord.
Challenge for today
Don’t just read the Word. Eat it. Pick one verse before bed tonight. Read it out loud 3 times. Sleep fed.
