IWM Devotion: Praying Beyond The Child 2

Scripture: “And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah, ‘Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful.’” — Judges 13:13 (ESV)

Word For Today

Yesterday, we spoke about the difference between praying for a baby and praying for a blueprint. We looked at how Manoah and his wife didn't just celebrate the pregnancy announcement; they immediately asked God for specific directions on how to raise the child who was coming.

When Manoah asked for guidance, he asked two very specific questions, “What shall be the manner of the child’s life? and “What shall we do?” Notice how God responded. In Judges 13:13-14, the angel returned with highly specific instructions, no wine, no unclean food, and raise him as a Nazirite. God didn’t get annoyed that they asked for clarification. He answered because He wants involved parents. He wants stewards, not spectators.

Too many of us are raising kids based on culture, TikTok trends, or simply repeating how we were raised. But God has a unique plan for your specific child, and He will tell you what it is if you ask. This means prayer cannot be a one-and-done event. We have to be parents who sit with God regularly and ask, “Lord, what does my child need in this specific season? How do I lead them, rather than just try to control them?”

Here is the challenging truth of the blueprint, you cannot lead a child where you haven’t been willing to go yourself. God gave the lifestyle instructions to the mother first. Your lifestyle, your walk with God, and your obedience matter long before the child even arrives or steps into their calling. Parenting isn’t just about what you do for the child; it’s about who you become so that the child can thrive under your leadership.

So, sometimes, the prayer isn't about changing the child's behavior. It's about asking, “God, am I fit for the role You’re calling me to? What do you want to change in me so I can steward them well?”

Manoah and his wife didn’t just get a baby; they got a blueprint. Because they asked, “What do we do?”, Samson was able to step into his destiny as a deliverer of Israel. Look at the children in your arms or the ones in your prayers today, dear woman. You aren’t just raising a child, you are raising a destiny.

 Prayer

Lord God, I don't want to be a spectator in my child's life; I want to be an intentional steward. Forgive me for the times I have parented out of my own strength, frustration, or cultural trends. Today, I ask You to change me first. Refine my heart, my habits, and my mouth. Give me the wisdom to raise them for Your purpose, not my preference, so they can walk fully into the destiny You have written for them. In Jesus name, Amen
