IWM Devotion: Praying Beyond the Child
Scripture: Judges 13:8, "Then Manoah prayed to the Lord, saying, 'Lord, please let the man of God come back to us again and give us more instructions about this son who is to be born."

Word For Today

In Judges 13, Manoah’s wife runs to her husband, breathless and amazed, with incredible news, “An angel just spoke to me. We’re having a son.”

Most of us would stop right there. We’d be screaming, thanking God, and immediately sharing the announcement. As women, we understand the depth of that moment. I’ve seen the sheer joy on a mother's face when she finally holds the child she’s spent years praying for. But I’ve also sat with women who are still in the quiet ache of the waiting, whispering, “Lord, just let me have one.”

That longing is entirely real. Motherhood is a beautiful gift, a holy assignment, and a privilege we don’t earn but receive. But when I read the story of Manoah and his wife, I couldn't move past what happened next. Yes, they rejoiced. But they didn’t stop at the celebration. Instead of just prepping the nursery, they immediately turned back to God and asked for a download from heaven. They needed to know what to do with the promise they had just been given.

A lot of us get stuck at "Level One" in our prayer lives. We pray, “God, give me a child.” That is a beautiful, valid prayer. But God’s plan never ends at conception. He has a distinct design for that child before they ever take their first breath (Jeremiah 1:5, Ephesians 2:10).

Parenting is so much more than feeding, kissing goodnight, and dressing our kids in the outfits we wish we’d had as children. Those things matter, but they aren't the full assignment.

Our real role goes deeper. It is about stewardship. Having a child doesn’t automatically make us ready to raise them. We need to know the specific assignment so we can parent on purpose, rather than by trial and error. Manoah and his wife weren’t just praying for a baby; they were praying for a blueprint.

  Reflection  

• If you are in a season of waiting, switch your prayers today. Don’t just pray for a positive pregnancy test. Start asking, “Lord, prepare my heart to steward the destiny of the child You want to give me.”

•  If you already have children, take a moment to write down their names. Honestly, ask yourself: Have I been managing them based on my own preferences, or am I asking God for His blueprint?

 Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the holy assignment of motherhood. Thank You for the promises and blessings You place in our lives. Today, I lift up my current (or future) children to You. Forgive me for stopping my prayers at the blessing. I ask you for a blueprint. Show me what You have placed inside them, and give me the vision to see them through Your eyes. In Jesus name, Amen
