Ephesians 5:29, “After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church.”

Word For Today

We think neglecting ourselves is godly, and caring for ourselves is pride. But God never asked you to despise the woman He made. He asked you to steward her well. Look at how God talks about you, fearfully and wonderfully made, Psalm 139:14. Beloved Romans 9:25. His masterpiece Ephesians 2:10. You don’t get to call careless what God called precious.

The self-love we are referring to isn’t about mirror pep talks and affirmations with no foundation. No. It’s about agreeing with God about you. It’s feeding yourself the truth when your mind feeds you lies. It’s resting when you’re drained instead of running on empty and calling it strength. It’s speaking kindly to yourself the way you speak to your daughter, your sister, or your friend.

Jesus summed it up in Mark 12:31, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Now, please notice the order. You can’t give what you don’t have. If you’re constantly empty, bitter, and depleted, you’ll either burn out or start resenting the people you’re serving.

Self-love, the God way means, guarding your heart. Honoring your limits. Caring for your body, mind, and spirit, for they’re all His temple. This isn’t about pampering your flesh. It’s about honoring the vessel God chose to carry His Spirit and purpose. When you love yourself rightly, you stop looking for validation in the wrong places. You stop shrinking to keep peace, and stop performing in order to feel worthy.

God’s love for you is the source. Your love for yourself is the response. So treat yourself well because He already does.

Reflection

Where have I been harsh with myself in ways I would never be with someone else?

Prayer

Father, teach me how to love myself the way You love me. Heal the places where I’ve believed I’m not enough, not worthy, not worth caring for. Help me to honor my body, mind, and spirit as Your temple. Let my self-care flow from knowing I’m already loved, not to earn love. Amen.
