Key Scripture: Genesis 3:7, “At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.”

Word For Today

I want us to please read this again: “At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.”

We see that the first thing sin did was make them feel exposed. And the first thing they did was hide.

Ever done that? You mess up, and suddenly you’re stitching together excuses, busy work, silence. You avoid prayer, dodge honest conversations, and skip church because “what if they knew?” That’s shame talking. It tells you that your exposure disqualifies you. So you hide behind fig leaves you made yourself.

But look what happens next in Genesis 3:9, “But the Lord God called to the man, ‘Where are you?’” God didn’t wait for them to get cleaned up. He came looking while they were still hiding, still ashamed, still in fig leaves. And later in verse 21 of that same Genesis, He replaces their flimsy covering with something real. He makes garments of skin for them. It costs something. Blood was shed to cover what they couldn’t fix.

That’s the pattern. Shame will make you hide, but Jesus says, "Come." What a loving father. You don’t have to manage your image before God can love you. The covering He offers isn’t made of fig leaves. It’s made of Christ. What shame exposes, His grace covers for us.

So today, stop hiding. Tell it to Him, bring the thing you’ve been sewing leaves around. You’re not more exposed than His mercy is wide, lady. I pray He helps us understand this truth. And that you won’t hide anymore. When His hands are open to you. 

Prayer

Jesus, I’ve been hiding in places you already know about. Thank you for coming after me anyway. Cover me with Your grace, in Jesus name. Amen.
